Testing, testing... is this thing on?
It has been a while since I've put anything down on (virtual) paper here, thanks to social media and the ease of throwing up a quick post whenever the mood strikes, but I felt like this deserved a more permanent spot online. After all, recipes can be easier to follow from something other than an Insta post.
Around here, we're pretty disciplined on restricting our intake of refined sugars... except where Sour Keys and Mini Eggs are concerned, but we're working on that (right, Ry?) Because, ew! Sugar has the same effect on your brain as cocaine and other addictive drugs. Not to mention, it has been documented to feed and breed the growth of malignant cells and I don't know about you, but cancer is not welcome here. Not in this bod. The important part is remembering to give in to some of your cravings here and there in order to curb binge eating of the crappy foods that your mind tricks you into thinking that you want all the time.
But, what if you could treat your mind and body to foods that you crave, but that also do your body a mad favour?!
Enter, Raw Vegan Chocolate.
Especially as women, we tend to crave chocolate later at night and if those cravings are happening on the reg, it could be a sign of a Magnesium deficiency. Our modern-day, over-processed, quick-fix foods and diets are super lacking in this essential nutrient. Magnesium is a mineral that aids in proper function of our brain and body. It helps to build strong teeth and bones, neutralize toxins, quiets nerves and is essential for many other functions. Chronic stress is a major Magnesium buster. Stressful situations (think, "fight or flight") require more Magnesium use by the body, therefore depleting the body's natural stores faster. Our society is chronically stressed, meaning we're all on the red eye flight to No-Magnesium Town. Another example is that without Magnesium, our muscles would be in a constant state of contraction and while that might look good while you're hulking around the gym, it won't be long until you start to see signs that your body is in trouble.
So, where's a connection between Magnesium and our cravings for sugary, chocolate treats?
Cacao powder is a known "super food" which is super rich in our new favourite super mineral. Can ya dig it?
I've been on the hunt for something healthy and sugar-free to satisfy our late-night, Netflix-watching, chocolate-craving fix and I think I've found it - scratch that - I know I've found it because it's good enough to eat for breakfast and I can't keep it in the house long enough to enjoy for myself before it's already been gobbled up.
Do yourself a favour and mix up this super quick and super easy treat to keep on hand for a super craving, hot oatmeal breakfast-topping, midday snack or dessert. Incorporate it into your diet anywhere you can. Another fav is adding Cacao powder to peanut butter and banana smoothies, but I'll save that for another post.
How many times did I use the word Super here? I swear, it's just that good.
Raw Vegan Chocolate (gluten, egg & dairy-free)
3/4 c. melted organic coconut oil
6 tbsp. organic cacao powder
2-4 tbsp. organic maple syrup
2 pinches (or more) of himalayan pink salt
mix all ingredients in a bowl, whisk together until very well blended and then pour into a shallow baking dish lined with parchment or into ice cube moulds. sprinkle cacao nibs on top for an added texture/flavour, if you'd like. pop in the freezer for 10-15 mins until set. enjoy!
-- if you're lucky to have leftovers, store them in fridge until ready to eat.
